Pioneer House, Brighton

24 flats for affordable rent, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Replacing an older care home (whose users we provided a new building for near the sea front), we provided massing studies and key views from the Downs above to prove the building could fit into this context.

My role was designer and project architect from inception to completion.

Working for the same client as the New Church Road project in Hove, but to a much lower budget, the design was meant to be simple and easy to construct. The contract had its difficulties, some generated by a low tender after the banking crash.

Nevertheless despite some setbacks on the way the building sits well at the edge of the countryside, and the basic design strategy seems to have been vindicated. For Affinity Sutton Housing, with Miller Bourne Architects, 2011.
