24 flats, a residential care home, specialist flats and house. LABC Building Excellence Best Social Housing Development in south east 2010.
I took this from planning to completion, so the basic design was set. Finding a robust way to achieve the recessed brick panel details – and manage the quality of bricklaying available – was one of the immediate tasks. Other design changes were required, in particular to the specialised flats for people with severe disabilities, the care home/respite centre, and the individual house for young people with learning difficulties to live semi-independently.
The two larger blocks (50 and 52 New Church Road) contained 24 shared ownership flats, the upper floors getting views of the sea at the bottom of the road. We installed thermal solar panels to assist with hot water provision in the care buildings. Code 3 Sustainable Homes and Ecohomes Excellent for the flats and BREEAM Excellent for the care home.
The contractor was Rok who were superb, I’m still friends with the project manager.
